/ Objective
Foreign nationals wishing to engage in research, development, training, and innovation activities at public or private entities in Spain may apply for a residence permit. This authorization is typically valid for three years or the duration of the contract if shorter, and allows the individual to reside and work throughout SpainThe application must be submitted by the Spanish company or entity in which the foreigner is going to provide services./ Legal Basis

Application Process:
- Gather Required Documentation: Ensure all required documents are collected and that eligibility criteria are met. For updated information, consult the Unit of Large Enterprises and Strategic Groups (UGE-CE) website).
- Payment of Fee: Pay the associated fee.After payment, a Reference Number (NRC) will be provided, which is needed to submit the application
- Complete the Application Form: Fill out the standard application form. Instructions for completing the form are provided in the accompanying PDF.
- Submit the Application: Submit the application through the procedure available on the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration’selectronic platform.
- Wait for Resolution: After submission, monitor the status of the application and receive notifications through the electronic platform.
/ Required Documentation
- Passport: A full, valid copy of the passport or travel document.
- Proof of Payment: Evidence of payment for the fee (model 790, code 038).
- Signed Application Form: A completed form signed by the applicant.
- Research Contract or Agreement: Document binding the researcher to the Spanish entity.
- Entity Details: NIF (Tax ID), identification documents, and legal representation of the entity.
- Criminal Background Check: A certificate confirming no criminal record in Spain or countries of residence in the last two years (unless already holding a residence or stay authorization for over six months).
/ Processing Notes
- You will need an electronic certificate, Cl@ve, or electronic IDN for identification and electronic signing.
- Information on document legalization and translation for immigration procedures is available.
- If the applicant is a legal entity, the application form must be signed electronically by the legal representative.
/ General Requirements
- Not being in Spain illegally.
- Being over 18 years old.
- Having no criminal record in Spain or the country where the applicant has resided for the last two years, for crimes under Spanish law.
- Not being on the list of individuals barred from entering countries with which Spain has specific agreements.
/ Family Unit
Family members may apply for residence authorization simultaneously or afterward. Eligible family members include:
- Spouse or partner.
- Minor children.
- Dependent adult children.
- Dependent parents

- Work Authorization Fee: 73,26 €(Model 790, Code 038)
- Visa Fee: Approximately 80 € (this may vary based on the applicant’s country).

/ Residence Types
- A. EU Research Residence For foreigners holding a PhD or equivalent qualification, selected by a research entity to perform research activities in Spain.
- B. National Research Residence. For foreigners working on research projects exclusively within Spanish entities.
- Validity: 3 years or the duration of the contract (whichever is shorter).
- Renewal: Can be renewed for 2 years, with the possibility of permanent residence after 5 years.
- Post-Research Activity: Foreigners may remain in Spain for up to 12 months after completing their research activity to seek employment or start a business. Notification must be given to the UGE-CE within specified timelines.
